By dedicating just two hours a week to your student at Step Up Tutoring, you can support their academic growth, foster a relationship, and change the world! Tutor online on your schedule, from wherever you are...prior tutoring experience is not required! We think you'll love it.

Step Up Tutoring is a California based non-profit organization that drives student success by providing virtual high-impact tutoring and mentorship to elementary and middle school students in under-resourced communities.
As a volunteer, you will be providing free online math tutoring and mentorship to under-resourced youth in grades 3-6 (ages 8-12). In 2022, only 2 in 10 fifth graders from low-income families in Los Angeles meet grade level standards in math. We will provide you with everything you need -- training, support, and an easy-to follow curriculum -- to help kids catch up and gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Live Scan fingerprinting background check
Reimbursement available to those in financial need
Unfortunately, prior Live Scans from other organizations cannot be accepted (DOJ rules)
The approval process for applicants located OUTSIDE of California will be delayed by 4-6 weeks due to DOJ processing protocols
Tech-savvy with a high-functioning computer/laptop and solid internet access

Conduct online sessions, 2 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks
Coordinate your tutoring schedule with the student’s family
Foster a positive, mentor relationship with your student

Tutors need to be at least 16 years old, possess strong communication skills, and have reliable internet access. Background checks and a training program are also required.

The process includes filling out an application form, completing an interview, undergoing a Livescan background check, and finishing a training workbook.

Do not worry! Most of our students are in 3rd grade and learning basic addition, subtraction and the times tables. Even with our older students, many of them need support learning these foundational math skills.

Unless you are applying through a paid program such as Work Study or College Corps, this is a volunteer opportunity, so tutors will only be paid in gratification and experience :)
