Update: We’ve matched 500 California Volunteer Tutors To Students

This week, we’ve reached a major milestone, matching our 500th volunteer tutor-student pairing! These 500 pairings, spread across 30 schools in all six LAUSD districts, are the result of more than 1,200 volunteer tutor applications.

Partnering With LAUSD To Provide Free, Virtual Tutoring For Underserved Students

Our partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) started in August 2020 to provide free, virtual tutoring and mentoring for students grades 3-6 from underserved L.A. communities affected by school closings brought on by Covid-19.

Working hand-in-hand with teachers, our volunteer tutors and mentors support each student on an individualized learning basis. We train our volunteers to support their assigned students in a fun, 1-on-1 virtual setting, following each teacher’s individual curriculum and material for Math and English support.

Not only do we work with each student to understand the material being assigned, our volunteers become true mentors! They instill confidence, curiosity, and accountability, helping their students to not just achieve short-term success, but to dream big and set goals to succeed in the long-term.

California Volunteers Making An Impact In Their Community

We’ve accumulated a rapidly growing force of mentors from the very community we serve. Our California volunteer tutors and mentors are from all age groups, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

With flexible virtual scheduling, and just a minimum commitment of 2 hours a week, our tutors  have stepped up to not only help LAUSD students achieve their full academic potential, but also to connect with and guide L.A.’s youth.

What’s Next For Step Up Tutoring

Our mission is to continue to provide and scale our free online tutoring for families who can’t afford private tutoring. By the end of the second quarter, we aim to have over 2,000 tutors matched. If you want to volunteer with Step Up Tutoring, fill out our quick tutor application and help change a student’s life!
