High School Students

High School Students! Apply to tutor a 3rd - 6th grade student through this unique and fulfilling opportunity!

Step Up to Close the Gap

Are you interested in developing valuable professional skills applicable to various career paths and eager to make a difference in your community? Volunteer with Step Up Tutoring!

You'll have the opportunity to tutor and mentor students in 3rd-6th grade, engage with their parents/guardians, and work with Step Up Tutoring’s dedicated staff members. It's a fulfilling way to gain firsthand experience supporting elementary school students through virtual one-on-one sessions. All training and tutoring are conducted virtually.

  • Volunteer tutor positions are available over the summer, as well as during the academic year, with a minimum commitment of two hours per week for three months.

  • No prior tutoring experience is necessary–we provide comprehensive training and resources to ensure your success as a tutor.

Join us in making a positive impact while gaining new skills, adding to your resume, and helping to close the opportunity gap for underserved students.

What to Expect

After completing a mandatory background check and our online training, you will be matched with a student for one-on-one virtual tutoring. You complete the training on your own time, which takes an average of five hours. As a volunteer tutor, your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Meet with your student twice a week at set times based on your mutual availability (scheduling is flexible).

  • Focus on building fundamental math skills using an evidence-based online program. The program is designed to provide personalized lessons for your student. You will support your student by answering questions and guiding them through challenging topics. Starting this fall, you will have the option to tutor a student in reading, as well.

  • Mentor your student, helping them build confidence and the skills needed to grow and thrive.

Requirements

To participate as a tutor in our program, you must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in high school.

You will also need to:

  • Submit your online application here.

  • Complete a background check (an application fee of approximately $25 is reimbursable upon request).

  • Complete general volunteer orientation and training modules.
